North County waterway is Port of Nehalem's domain

Subject

Channel of the Nehalem River

Description

"The main purpose of the Port is to improve the channel of the Nehalem River." said, Zella Schwartzenhauer Port of Nehalem Administrative Secretary. There isn't any land for development, so the primary function is to make the channel and bay safer for navigation. The jetties were originally built in 1912 and the people paid for them. Then they weren't kept up. The federal government is responsible for the upkeep. In 1985 an ordinance was passed making water skiing legal between Snag Island and the old bridge. Revenues for the Port ending June 30, 1987 totaled $40,098-$36,1987 from taxes $1,750 from inter-governmental revenues, and $2,153 from misc. revenues. The Port Commission consisted of Schwartzenhauer,Dart, F.E."Shang"Knight,(pres)Stan Jud(sec) Jack Israel,(vp) and Charles Collin.
